U of T summer of code
Some of you may be familiar with Google's Summer of Code program. It's an excellent way to expose undergraduate computer science students to the world of collaborative development by pushing them headfirst into open source projects. Google actually pays them a sizable (well, maybe not by today's standards, but it helps with tuition costs) stipend upon successful completion of the program, which usually lasts through the summer months.
I have to admit that I think there's a lot of untapped raw talent here at U of T hiding under the woodwork. I also think that there's a lot of potential in collaborating with interested faculty to get a program like that going, and I can only see benefits from such a program, such as:
- Amazing learning opportunities for students, especially in the teamwork department, that quite frankly most students nowadays lack
- Great way to get free/inexpensive, high quality resources (talent)!
- Collaborate with faculty
An excellent example of a similar program is what Seneca is doing at their Centre for Development of Open Technology (CDOT).

good idea :)
well this is a good idea, but I think our department already having "U of T summer of code" every semester, hiring coop students and developers working as "mentors" for them :)
he he he well except there is no evaluation of student or mentors ;)
Good!
I always liked that about IITS. I'd like to see this as a more formal academic practice, though, perhaps as part of a 3d or 4th year course/independent project.
Once a community is established at U of T, "dropping someone" off into it will serve as an excellent collaborative exercise for students. As we all know, collaborating on a coding project is not the same as collaborating on a report or a proposal. In my opinion, today's computer science graduates lack that skill.

I wouldn't mind seeing someone fix this issue that has plagued us from getting Mac as replacement for Dell-Linux boxes.
