Idea: Forum organization / subforums

I was just thinking that it would be a good idea to have a few subforums for targeted discussion and collaboration. Maybe something along the lines of the various email lists that already exist, i.e. developers, system administration, networking/security, web design, general discussion, etc.

Not only will it help organize all the information, but it could help draw more visitors to the site.

Cheers,
Mike

Good idea

That would be good. I'll set something up and hopefully we'll draw some crowds.

This is a good idea. Instead of guessing at which subforums to create, however, I recommend that we let the community drive the process. Otherwise we run the risk of creating forums that won't get used. Mike put in his two cents. Now what subforums do you want to see here?

Overcategorizing doesn't really work...

I second Greg's concerns here, form my experience running web forums and web CMSs in general, we tend to over-categorize things and in the end having more categories than content. :)

One safe category is perhaps a brainstorming section of the forum vs. general discussion, where we can have all our "off the wall" type conversations... such as good places to grab some lunch.

going to take a stab at it

I agree that some differentiation in fora might help so I'm going to take a stab at being the first to create something other than general discussion if the system will let me.

Nope

Can't create a new Forum. Oh well. I guess it will just have to be a new forum topic inside the general discussion forum.

Nice pics, guys! Now I feel

Nice pics, guys! Now I feel left out, I'll have to dig one up.

General categories then, Rouben? Bricks and Mortar, Blue Skies, and Off-Topic, or something of that nature?

Hey Luke! :D Definitely agree

Hey Luke! :D

Definitely agree with the Off-Topic and also don't want to over categorize. Many online communities are built through their off topic sections. After all, us IT folk often need a place to unwind, vent, and even post links to cool, new tech related news. ;)

One bazillion GeekPoints for Mike!!!!!

Again, big shout outs to Mike. This is truly a momentous occasion for this forum. :D

Wow how did you come across that site...it's so innovative - amalgamating old-school ideas with new age ones. Linus would be proud. I would like to add the following supplementary site for additional reference material.

Thanks for the love!

Thanks for the love! :D

However, I'll give credit to to NDarbyshire's great blog entry that reminded me about the classic Rickroll.
