Interested in an iPhone and Mobile Device Development Lecture Series?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to poll the population here at U of T to see how many people would be interested in a lecture series for developing Mobile Apps for the iPhone (with some possible talks on other platforms such as Android if there is enough interest there). If there is enough interest to drive this I would like to propose the creation of an evening lecture series for those interested (through the TechKnowfile Venue), where we could potentially record it and post it up for everyone. I have been hearing questions about iPhone development from various sources around U of T and I see this as an opportunity to potentially promote some learning and information on the subject. Let me know what you think!

Great idea

Mike,

Great idea, I'm sure many people will be interested in this one. I for one would love to attend!

Cool!

Sounds good, but I can't promise not speaking out about Objective C. ;)

Seriously, though, I think these kinds of learning opportunities should happen more and more around the university. I would also love to see the ODLC recognize the IT sector more in-depth and perhaps even offer certification courses at more economically feasible rates (free would be nice).

Bring in the students...

I am hoping to do something similar to the Stanford U lectures but instead target examples that would be of interest to solving issues in the U of T realm (and by association other Universities as well). I am also hoping it will fire up our students as well and would like to get them involved in this process. Having been a student and a TA for the University I know there are a lot of talented individuals out there who could create some pretty amazing things with technology when given the right tools to do so.

Just my 2.5 cents ;)

Great!

Add me to the list of interested developers.

I would like to add that there is a community of cocoa/webobjects developers in Toronto that meets occasionally. Check out http://www.tacow.org/ The next meeting will be July 14, and is usually at the George Vari building on the Ryerson campus.

Thanks Tim :)

It's really great to have you aboard. I checked out the tacow site - it looks like something that we might attend to see what's going on in their world - do a little reconnaissance with some other members of the community. One approach to providing instruction is to create a curriculum with topics that showcase what is possible with Mobile computing by defining some areas where this technology could be leveraged within the University (we could even ask for the aid of faculty - I heard there is a lot of interesting research happening there).

For example, a mock University Phonebook application, a student guide that can be used to post and lookup user-relevant news & events, important updates, class locations, etc. (from where you are standing) that are happening around the University, leveraging existing technology that has already been put in place at the University. These are just some potential ideas, but you get the point. We could also evolve the implementation of these applications using an incremental process throughout the lecture series referencing what has been learned in a more cumulative fashion. In this way we could create an up-to-date, step-by-step illustration of the principals taught during the lecture series.

Please feel free to continue the brainstorming session...

Sweet!

Count me in and I know couple more developers who will be interested :)
Great idea Michael!

Thanks Mari!

Thank you for the support - it will take some work but if there is enough interest in the University community then it will be well worth it :). To all those interested please feel free to add anything you might want to see/learn participate in ;). Does anyone know faculty who might be interested in participating in this proposed venture? I have a few leads so I will follow up on those in the mean time.

Handheld devices have become

Handheld devices have become ruggedized for use in mobile field management situations to record information in the field. They are used to achieve a variety of tasks for increasing efficiency that include digitizing notes, sending and receiving invoices, asset management, recording signatures, managing parts and scanning barcodes. Handheld computers used at work have molded over time into a variety of form factors, including smartphones on the low end, handheld PDAs, Ultra-Mobile PCs and Tablet PCs. Laptops do not come under handheld computers as they are not small enough to hold in one's hand.
