FreeSSHd - The free missing puzzle piece for Windows Servers

I've decided to share another gem from my free software collection. Enjoy....

What is freeSSHD?

freeSSHd, like it's name says, is a free implementation of an SSH server. It provides strong encryption and authentication over insecure networks like Internet. Users can open remote console or even access their remote files thanks to buit-in SFTP server.

System requirements

Both applications can be run on NT based operating system, starting from Windows NT version 4.0. There are no special hardware requirements, any computer that can run WinNT will be sufficient. They use very low amount of resources, but you must keep in mind the memory consumption of applications that your remote users will use and number of users as well.

Opera + Cloud... old news just like "podcasting"

Rouben's picture

It always amazes me how companies rehash basic concepts with a pretty bow and create a "revolution" out of nothing. A great example of why marketing can be key, I guess. Just like Apple created a hysteria out of uploading MP3 files onto a web, calling that "podcasting", Opera nowadays is doing the same thing out of bundling a nice file transfer client into their browser. I guess my understanding of what really goes on under the hood kills all the buzz for me... I can see, however, how from an end-user's perspective something something as fundamental as plonking your PowerPoint into your public_html directory and e-mailing your friend the link is revolutionary... especially when it's all pretty much reduced to a couple of easy "grandma friendly" steps. :)

The sad thing (at least for me) is that this is 200% marketing. Firefox has had this "platform" they discuss in the article since day one through their add-ons/extensions. In fact there are plugins for Firefox to upload photos to services like Yahoo's Flickr and Google's Picasa. Yesterday's news wrapped in today's cover page, if you ask me.

SSH for Windows

Rouben's picture

Oh man, finally a relatively mature SSH server for Windows! It was very tiresome stumbling upon all those shareware versions, or the hard to deploy OpenSSH port.

Combined with the GNU Win32 project, to bring UNIX tools to Windows, this could actually come in very handy...

Don't forget your pants

I swore I showcase this little gem when I was still @ OISE no? Hm.. maybe I only installed it on my personal workstation.

Can't fathom the thought of living without a SSH/SFTP daemon on any server. Whether that be Mac, Linux, Solaris, or Windows. It's like walking outside without pants... ha..ha
