Happy Simcoe Day
Happy Simcoe Day – in honour of John Graves Simcoe (1752-1806)
A day celebrating the founder of Toronto as capital of Ontario – he wasn’t a perfect man, but he did many great things: first Lt. Governor of Upper Canada (Ontario) introduced the judicial system and trial by jury in southern Ontario, established a significant urban plan for Toronto and southern Ontario (built Yonge and Dundas streets and established the road grid).
And perhaps most significant of all, he abolished slavery in Ontario – a quarter of a century before it was abolished in the British Empire as a whole!
Your family’s name is on everything from lakes to buildings, but sometimes we forget why – so here’s to you and your legacy J.G. – you were definitely a man before your time, and thank you for that!
